"Gut Feelings," "Hunches," "Precognitive Dreams..."
We're all intuitive! Perhaps you've experienced this as "mother's intuition," or "gut feelings" that turn out to be right. Maybe you've dreamed about events before they happened, or you've "just known" something that later proved correct. That's your intuition communicating with you.
Oftentimes, intuitions feel "random" for most people, instead of feeling like a tool they can tap into when they want to.
What most people don't realize is that intuition is trainable, and just like a muscle, yours can become stronger with practice.
My story, (and maybe yours, too)...
I've had intuitive experiences from as early as I can remember. I often dreamed of or "saw" things in my mind's eye before they happened.
I also was able to discern spirits of people and animals who had passed on, felt other people's physical and emotional symptoms in my own body, and found I knew things without knowing how I knew them.
In grade school, I remember that some of the correct answers on exams just "looked" or "felt" different to me, which made it easier to "guess" the correct answer when I didn't otherwise know it.
And in the days before cell phones and caller ID, I often knew who was calling - sometimes right before the phone even rang.
Over the years, my curiosity led me to study with a variety of skilled psychics and mediums and read more about intuitive development.
What I learned is that:
- Intuition is a sense, just like our "normal" physical senses
- Pretty much everyone is intuitive
- Our intuitive strengths and challenges can change over time
- No one is 100% accurate (and that's ok!)
- Intuition is a wonderful tool to use alongside our other tools (like knowledge, experience, logic and common sense)
- With practice, we can all become more intuitive
- You don't need to aspire to being a professional intuitive (I'm not one!) in order to benefit from and enjoy using intuition in daily life.
As a psychologist, I view intuition as one of our many innate abilities.
I've also learned that we can become better intuitives (and also just happier, healthier, calmer and more aware) people in general by using tools like mindfulness, guided imagery, and self-hypnosis to set aside worry, distractions, performance anxiety, etc. and learn to focus and notice the intuitive and other information available to us.
If you're curious about developing your own intuition further, I invite you to take my course, "Developing Everyday Intuition."
